Narrator: The Americans and Russian are going to a local bar to get dinner and finish up the negotiations. In Russia, connecting socially with business partners is very important and often can make or break a deal. It is customary to give gifts at these types of social events which are opened in the presence of others. The deal is consummated over heavy drinking and socializing among the partners.
Here the Americans are bonding with their Russian counterpart. The two Americans are mindful of not offending their host and fortunately Ricky is a very understanding host. All three are really enjoying themselves and a deal is imminent.
(Waling to the bar)
Russian: This is my favorite place to eat. They have the best Russian borscht ever.
American no. 2: What’s borscht?
Russian: Delicious Russian food.
Narrator: Borscht is a vegetable soup from Eastern Europe, which is traditionally cooked including beetroot as a main ingredient[1][2] which gives it a strong red color.
American no. 1: We wanted to give you this expensive bottle of fine Russian Vodka.
Russian: (sarcastic) Thanks. Haven’t had this in a while. Vodka in Russia, who would have thought? Accept this bottle of fine wine as a token of my appreciation.
Narrator: Typical gifts include candy, wine, or luxury goods that are scarce in Russia. Vodka is most definitely not appropriate because it’s so common.
American no. 1 and 2: Thank you so much
Gather around the table
Russian: Just to let you guys know, it’s impolite in Russian culture to cross your legs.
American no.1: Why’s that?
Russian: You show the soles of your feet which are considered very dirty. \
Russian: excuse me while I take out a smoke (puff). I understand you Americans are very health conscious but smoking is still very prevalent in Russia and very relaxing. Let us toast to Russia and America becoming partners and to good health!
<Toast>
American no. 2: So how has Russia changed in the last 10 years? Walking down the street it seems very Western.
Russian: That is true we have many western influences. I would say that Russia has had higher living standards and is becoming a new world power because of Putin’s great leadership.
American no. 1: Putin is a very strong leader, fearless and respected.

Russian: Ah American, you must drink some more! Let me pour you some. Please! Enjoy yourself.
Americans: Thank you very much.
Narrator: It is impolite to refuse food or drink if offered. The only acceptable excuses are for health or religious purposes.
American no. 1: We’ve been waiting for the food for so long! Did they forget our order?
Russian: No, it is customary for restaurants to take a long time with their food. We are lucky, I’ve been to restaurants where half the menu is unavailable.
Narrator: Some time later…
American no. 2: Wow, we’ve been here for 5 hours. I’ve probably had a gallon of borscht and vodka.
Russian: Have some more vodka!
American no. 1 and 2: Ok!
Russian should touch American and say “I think we can agree to this deal.”
Global Clean Drinking Water

Some Trivia:
- How much of the earth's surface is water?
- How much of that water is fresh?
- How much of that water is suitable for drinking?
Of that 1%, each American uses over 600 liters of water per day.
In Africa, per capita daily water use is just 20 liters.
Some Statistics:
- Over 2.6 billion people lack access to clean water supply. That's 40% of the world's population!
- Approximately 1.1 billion are not provided with safe water, and 2.6 billion have inadequate sewerage.
- These conditions result in the deaths of between 2 and 5 million people each year.
Water Advocates Ad
Well over 1.6 million children are dying each year due to unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation.
From drinking contaminated water, a child dies every two minutes.
Causes
1. Lack of education
2. Lack of distribution systems
3. Lack of purification capabilities
Relation to poverty
Water management affects poverty in 4 ways

What's Being Done
Non-Profit Organizations are main players in delivering solutions and assistance
- Raising Awareness
- Drilling Wells, Offering Solutions
Technology that is cheap yet effective
- Procter & Gamble Effervescent Tablet- Military use as well as for underdeveloped countries. Drop the tab in the water, wait few minutes, and then it is safe to drink.
- The Straw- For $15, it can disinfect 700 liters of water.
- Global Water Ideal Technology Characteristics
- Simple
- Requires no electricity
- Uses liquid chlorine
- Self-Regulated
- Nanotechnology
- Technology in general should not be seen as a cure all: a lot of problems arise from the way we live.
- Problems of affordability, access to technology, and fair distribution are still an issue, and will not just be solved by new technology
